First, separate two very different jobs
The biggest mistake caravanners make is treating "filling the tanks" and "drinking the water" as one problem. They are not.
Filling tanks is about volume and protecting your van: removing sediment, rust and dust, and reducing the hard-water minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium) found in Australian bore water that scale up your pipes, pumps and appliances. Drinking water is about safety and taste at the tap: disinfection, chemical reduction and fine filtration.
A filter built for one job is usually wrong for the other. That is why our complete caravan system uses two filters - a tank-fill pre-filter and a point-of-use purifier.
Why granular carbon is the wrong choice for tank filling
Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters are cheap and common, but on bore water they clog quickly and cannot reduce dissolved minerals. If you are filling tanks from bores, you want a dedicated bore water and sediment pre-filter with a refillable 1 micron cartridge instead. (More on carbon types in our water learning centre.)
Understand micron ratings
Micron rating tells you the size of particle a filter blocks. A 1 micron sediment filter is great for tank filling. For drinking water you want finer: our 5-in-1 purifier is rated to 0.01 micron ultrafiltration, which is far finer than the 1 micron most caravan filters stop at.
Disinfection: the part you can't see
Clarity and taste are easy to judge. Micro-organisms are not - and they are the real risk when you draw water from rivers, bores or unknown taps. Look for a purifier with genuine disinfection, tested to a recognised standard such as AS/NZS 4276.7. Our purifiers use Quantum Disinfection technology; you can read how that works in the learning centre and see our testing approach on the lab results page.
A simple checklist before you buy
- Are you filling tanks, treating drinking water, or both?
- Will you draw from bores or hard-water sources? (If yes, you need a pre-filter.)
- What micron rating does the drinking-water stage achieve?
- Is the disinfection independently tested, and to what standard?
- What is the cartridge life in litres, and how easy is it to change?
- Does it fit your plumbing without a professional install?
Our recommendation
If you only treat town water and want better, safer drinking water, start with the 5-in-1 Point of Use Purifier. If you fill from bores or travel off-grid, the complete inside-and-out system covers both jobs in one kit. Either way, keep a set of replacement cartridges on board.
